Ever Wonder Who’s Supposed To Maintain Sidewalks?

Though it may be our ardent fantasy that Orleans or Jefferson Parish  should be responsible for the repair of our sidewalks, please read below before you get into an argument at city hall.

Maintaining a sidewalk in a proper state, free from hazardous conditions is the responsibility of the residential or commercial property owner.  Property owners can be billed by the City for installation or paving of a sidewalk if it is in the interest of public safety for the City to make such a repair.

However, the Recovery Roads Program external link does include some funding for repairs of sidewalks damaged by Hurricane Katrina. To see if the sidewalk in front of your property has been deemed eligible for repair by FEMA, visit the Recovery Roads website external link.

To ensure your new sidewalk will be built to the proper standard, click here for the Guidelines for Sidewalk Construction external link. If your sidewalk is in the French Quarter/Vieux Carre click here for Guidelines for Sidewalk Construction in the Vieux Carre.
